YOUR GUIDE TO THE MAP
How to play CountryChase
Read the country name, study the map, and select the place you think is right. Every round is a chance to connect a familiar name with its location.
Start with the world or one continent
The world quiz draws from 160 places. To focus on one continent, choose Europe, Africa, Asia, North America, South America, or Oceania. Continent quizzes also include the 36 countries omitted from the World quiz, including smaller island nations and microstates. The complete country list shows all 195 places across the continent quizzes.
- Open a quiz and choose Start challenge.
- Pick a mode, then find the country named above the map. Its flag appears beside its name.
- Click or tap its shape. Use an unlabeled point target for a small country where one is provided.
- The game shows the answer after a find, skip, or automatic reveal, then moves to the next question.
Choose your pace
- World Challenge / continent Challenge: find every place in the selected quiz in a shuffled order. The timer runs, and four wrong selections on one question reveal its answer.
- Quick Play: try up to 20 randomly selected places. A continent with fewer than 20 included places uses its whole pool. The same timer and four-mistake rule apply.
- Practice Mode: visit the whole selected pool with no timer and unlimited attempts. An optional Hint gives a region clue. You can also skip to see the answer. Practice does not set personal bests.
Changing the map view only moves the camera; it does not change the questions in a run. Open a different continent quiz to change your question pool.
What counts as a guess?
A correct selection counts as one country found. Each counted wrong selection adds a mistake and breaks your streak. In timed modes, selecting the same wrong country again on the current question has no additional penalty. In Practice, repeated wrong selections count too.
After four wrong selections on one question in a timed mode, the answer is revealed. It does not count as found, and the automatic reveal does not add another guess. Skip reveals the location in every mode and counts as one guess. A skip breaks your streak but does not add a wrong-answer mistake.
Completed places stay colored and cannot be selected again. Countries and territories outside the selected quiz pool provide map context; selecting them does not add a guess or mistake. In Quick Play, other places in the quiz's full pool can still count as wrong guesses even when they are outside that run's question selection.
Read your results
Accuracy = countries found ÷ total counted guesses × 100. For example, finding 8 countries with 10 counted guesses gives 80% accuracy. Guesses include correct answers, counted wrong answers, and skips. Accuracy is rounded to the nearest whole percent.
A first-attempt find adds one to your streak in timed modes. A mistake or skip resets it. The results show your highest streak, elapsed time, mistakes, and an attempt breakdown, plus a list of places to practice.
Personal bests are saved separately for the selected quiz and timed mode in this browser. Finding more countries ranks first; when the found totals match, a faster run wins. Records do not sync between devices. Use Back to map to review a finished run and Results to reopen its summary.
What the map colors mean
- Green: found with no mistakes.
- Lime: found after 1 mistake.
- Yellow: found after 2 mistakes.
- Orange: found after 3 mistakes, or 3 or more in Practice.
- Dark red: automatically revealed, or skipped. Skipped places also have a dashed border.
Hover a completed place to see its name and exact mistake count. The results list also gives a text breakdown, so you do not need to rely on color.
Move around the map
Drag to pan. Scroll, pinch, or use the + and − buttons to zoom. The map view menu moves to a continent without changing your target. Reset view returns to the starting view for the selected quiz. Move the pointer outside the map when you want to scroll the page.
- Space: pause or resume when focus is outside a control or map shape.
- + / −: zoom in or out.
- 0: reset the map view.
- Tab: move through controls and map targets; Enter or Space on a map target selects it.
Pause also has an on-screen button. Leaving the browser tab pauses the run automatically. Return to the tab and resume when you are ready. Opening a game help dialog pauses play too.
Each new country name is read aloud using recordings hosted with the game. English is used by default. Country names switch to the selected language when Ελληνικά, Español, Français, Deutsch, 简体中文, 日本語, Bahasa Indonesia, Русский, Italiano, Português, Nederlands, Türkçe, Polski, 한국어 or हिन्दी is selected. Use Sound on / Sound off below the map to control both voice and game tones. The game remembers your sound preference.
